Why Sri Lanka is doing it and who it impacts
May 25, 2026, Sri Lanka has officially scrap its ETA fees for citizens from 40 nations in a bid to boost its struggling tourism sector. Effective May 25, this new law will be applicable to visitors from the said nations. What was previously the price for getting the electronic visa (ranging from $50- $60 depending on the applicant’s nationality and usually charged by most countries as a processing fee), is now entirely free. Let us look at the reasons for this bold step and how it impacts its visitors.
Why has this been done?
In the past five years Sri Lankan tourism has been significantly impacted. In 2019, Easter bombings took place followed by a global pandemic that brought everything to a halt. By 2022, a crisis shook Sri Lanka; this had serious consequences which have meant that visitor numbers have remained well below 2019 even by mid-2026 which is quite astonishing given the scenic beauty of the country. In response to the changing times Sri Lanka made this decision for a few primary reasons:
1. Skyrocketing Travel costs : At a time where all costs of travel are significantly high, expecting visitors to part with a sum of $50-80 in visa costs on top of everything else can deter most travelers. This makes tourists hesitant in even considering certain destinations.
2. Competition : Other South Asian countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives etc., already offer visa free entry and other nations have started removing their visa fees as well. Sri Lanka had to adapt to survive competition and aims to draw tourists away from its neighbors.
3. Promotion of Economic Recovery and Transparency : It is apparent that Sri Lanka intends to attract tourists back to the country following the tough economic climate it has been facing with the fuel shortage and the political instabilities that arose in 2022. By offering free ETA fees, Sri Lanka is conveying to the world that it welcomes foreign visitors and to alleviate concerns about the country ‘riping tourists off’ with various unnecessary charges.
4. Encouraging Tourism at off-peak seasons : It’s customary for Sri Lanka to experience peak tourist season during the summer holidays where everyone is vacationing. With the commencement of the southwest monsoon in May, typically low-tourist periods like the month of May are aimed at making visits more attractive and thus avoid over-tourism and over-saturation during the summer holidays. The number of room bookings are currently under 30%.
Who does this benefit?
The countries that will benefit from this initiative are the most significant sources of tourism in Sri Lanka. All of these nations are also close allies of the island nation. The list of top markets now with free visa fees include: India (primary market for Sri Lanka), China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. Other countries popular with Sri Lanka’s tourists also include the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia and other European nations like Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland etc. Other countries on the list are South Korea, Singapore and Vietnam together with Brazil and Mexico. Some Gulf countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar along with Russia will also enjoy free ETA fees. Citizens from the remaining nations (most African countries except for Madagascar, South America other than Brazil and Bangladesh, etc.,) would still need to apply for a visa.
Three Categories of Travelers Benefiting From This Move:
1. Budget travelers and backpackers The $50-70 that they would be saving on each tourist means they can effectively stick to their budget and utilize this amount for their meals, train tickets, entrance fees to popular sites such as temples, etc.
2. Short trip travelers and multiple-destination travelers Individuals looking for short, weekend getaways from cities in India, like Bangalore or Mumbai, can now travel to Galle or Colombo much more economically with significantly reduced costs.
3. Families The estimated cost for a visa/ETA for an average family of 5 was about $250. With the waiver of fees, this expense will be eradicated, and families may now consider winter holidays in Sri Lanka.

This visa fee is not intended for those intending to stay for longer than 30-60 days (depending on nationality) as penalties apply for overstaying.
Although the government charge for the visa is now free, third party visa processing sites may still charge a small fee. Always apply at the official ETA Sri Lanka website to avoid this.
