South Korea Makes Its Digital Nomad Visa Permanent And Easier to Get

South Korea had a visa called the F-1-D “workation” visa. This visa was available for two years. It was not a permanent thing. On June 30, the Ministry of Justices Korea Immigration Service granted a permanent visa. To make it simpler for people to obtain this visa, they also made some modifications to the regulations.

The Justice Minister, Jung Sung-ho said that this visa is a way to get creative people from around the world to come to South Korea. The goal is to get these people to stay in South Korea and become a part of the country. By the end of the trial period 398 foreigners had this visa. This is a number and it seems that the government wanted to make it easier for more people to get this visa.

What Actually Changed

The big change is about money. People who wanted this visa previously, had to show that they made a lot of money. They had to make at double the average income in South Korea. This was between $66,000 and $70,000 annually. Some individuals, such as independent contractors or those who work remotely and earn little money, found it difficult to obtain the visa because of this rule.

Now the rules are different. The amount of money you need to make depends on how old you’re where you want to live in South Korea. If you want to live outside of Seoul you do not need to make much money. The government wants people to move to cities and towns not just stay in Seoul.

Another big change is how long you can stay in South Korea with this visa. Priorly you could only stay for two years. Now you can stay for three years. This gives you time to settle in and make a life more easier in South Korea.

The Basics That Haven’t Changed

With the new rules some things are still the same.

  • The visa is for people who work for companies outside of South Korea. You do not need a company in South Korea to sponsor your visa.
  • You have to be at 18 years old and have at least one year of experience in your field.
  • You need to have health insurance that covers you for least 100 million won.
  • You need to have a record and pass a background check.
  • You cannot work for a company in South Korea. Make money in South Korea.
  • Your spouse and children can come with you to South Korea.

Why This Matters Beyond Korea

South Korea is not the country that wants digital nomads to come and live there. Many countries in Asia and Europe are trying to get these people to come and live there too. Countries like Portugal, Spain, Japan and Malaysia have made it easier for digital nomads to come and live there.

South Korea’s strategy differs in that it encourages people to live in towns and cities rather than just Seoul. They intend to encourage people to move to these areas by making it easier for them to get a visa.

Should You Apply?

If you wanted to get this visa but could not because of the money rules you should look at it again. The new rules make it easier for people to get the visa especially if you are willing to live outside of Seoul. South Korea has internet, good healthcare and a low cost of living. This brings more liveability place for digital nomad visa holders

It is recommended to read the guidelines and requirements before submitting your application. There are still some details that require finalisation by the government. Keep up with the latest information available.

You should always check with the South Korea Ministry of Justice or your Korean consulate before you apply.
